Country roads...they will lead you to the most interesting places. Like a charming brewery. Welcome to Buffalo
Mountain Brewery and McDaniel’s Tavern in the picturesque Floyd, Virginia. Floyd is located southwest Virginia
in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains. Floyd has quickly become known as a music destination, and now it’s a
craft beer destination.
Buffalo Mountain Brewery is located on Webbs Mill Road in the quaint town of Floyd, Virginia. Harkening back to
the roots of his ancestor William McDaniel, who owned and operated William’s Ordinary in Prince William County,
Virginia in the 1700’s, owner Bill McDaniel wanted to stay true to his Scot-Irish roots and open a little piece of the
old country in his hometown.
After retiring from the Air Force, Bill and Lynn moved their family back home to Floyd and the dream of opening a
brewery became a reality. Buffalo Mountain proudly offers a 10% discount to active and retired military and first
responders.
The Mrs. and I were invited to sponsor the bingo night at the brewery. Of course, bingo night had me thinking of little
old ladies and gents sitting around tables at the local VFW shouting out Bingo! But this was bingo with beer! We
arrived early to set out goodies that were given away as prizes for the winners that night…Beerdedbeerman t-shirts,
pint glasses and stickers, along with a gift card to the brewery.
Rather quickly the brewery filled up with local and first timers alike and soon the entire place was abuzz with patrons
ready to play. The Mrs. and I found a seat in the back in two comfortable chairs. One of the first things you will notice
upon entering Buffalo Mountain is the eclectic feel; a cross between an old-world pub and a new-age coffee shop.
Comfy chairs, sofas, high-top tables and even a dining room table and chairs. Every seat was taken, and bingo cards
were everywhere. Buffalo Mountain immediately makes you feel like you’re at home. Comfortable and unassuming.
Food trucks are available for your dining enjoyment; Fat Bean Taco was there this particular Tuesday (tacos on a
Tuesday, what a novel idea). Also, McDaniel’s Tavern, a part of the brewery, offers plenty of snacks – I would highly
recommend the pimento cheese (amazing). For the non-beer drinkers, there’s coffee, hot cocoa, and even smoothies.
Buffalo Mountain brews small batch beers in a 2-barrel brew house. The beers change frequently. Some beers come
back periodically, while others are limited release beers. No matter the style of beer you prefer, you can find a beer to
suit your taste buds. And like most breweries, there’s a story behind the name of each tasty brew. Farmhand Mike’s
Cream Ale was brewed for Mike who works on the McDaniel’s family farm. Mike, like many red-blooded Americans,
is a big beer drinker. Bill was determined to brew a beer that Mike would enjoy. This cream ale is an enjoyable, easy
drinking beer that any farmhand would enjoy.
With an ambience of home and a wonderful outdoor space, you are sure to enjoy a trip up the mountain to visit Buffalo
Mountain and the “Republic” of Floyd. Cheers!
Farmhand Mike’s Cream Ale – Cream Ale – Pale golden color, a light malt, pilsner nose, creamy with a slight malty
sweetness. Easy drinking.
Social Lubricant – Belgian Pale Ale – trappist yeast, slightly sweet with a ting of bitter finish.
McDaniel’s Scotch Ale – Scotch Ale – hint of caramel malt on the nose, roasted caramel malts. Tasty!
Charlie Brown Pumpkin Porter – Porter – Cinnamon and nutmeg nose, roasted malts with a blast of cinnamon,
nutmeg, allspice and a ginger bite to finish. The Mrs.’s favorite.
